Wealth and Wisdom: Week of October 26, 2026

If you are years away from retirement, it can feel like a finish line that’s hard to imagine ever reaching. And then when you finally get there and decide you can afford to stop working, you discover retirement isn’t a finish line after all. It’s a new set of challenges, new rules to learn, and for many, new things to worry about.

In survey after survey, retirees say their biggest fear is running out of money. And with prices rising faster than incomes these days, that’s a real possibility for some people. Some retirees today are rethinking their decision – or at the very least trying to get creative in how they spend and manage their savings to make them last. Others have all the money they will ever need but worry they are spending too much, too fast – and wind up leaving a lot of wonderful choices on the table as a result. This week’s Wealth and Wisdom addresses both situations.

Among the clients we work with in our practice, we’ve seen both extremes and helped them navigate the uncertainties that retirement brings. And as unexciting as it might sound, we have found the solution to be planning – setting spending goals, managing resources wisely, and maintaining a long-term focus through good and bad times.

The new challenges retirement brings may change with time, but they don’t go away. But planning and preparing for them – instead of waiting for and reacting to them – seems to us to be the best approach.
